Meet Emma, Sarah and Mel - three sassy women
who are the brains behind SpencerLacy.
In their own words, they speak about their label
which is a labour of love for them all.
Director and Sales & Marketing Manager, SpencerLacy.
What inspired SpencerLacy…
We wanted a label that offered something for everyone,
something that was ageless, comfortable and pretty and had the ability to complement what women already have in their wardrobes.
We couldn't find anything in the marketplace that did all those things - either here in Australia or on our buying trips overseas.
The answer was to create our own label!
Who do you think defines glamour…
I'm always reminded of Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - that great pointy bustline and slinky slip is very memorable.
The classic SpencerLacy customer is…
It really depends on the person and their individual style.
SpencerLacy is all about layering versatile basics -
it allows women to create a style that's all their own.
Therefore, our label attracts many different kinds of women from all walks of life. She may work, she may not. Our prices are really competitive, so their income is not a huge factor. I'm happy to say that SpencerLacy seems to appeal to women of all ages!
On collaborating with Sarah and Mel…
Sarah and I worked together in other companies for 10 years before starting our own company Mission Brown. As we work so well together, SpencerLacy was a natural progression for us. Mel is the newest member of the SpencerLacy team and what a great addition! She has a fantastic eye for style and colour and brings a really fresh, youthful approach to the team which complements our years of experience. Striking this balance means we're able to create a look with broad appeal, that's right for a broad cross-section of women.

Why we developed the SpencerLacy label…
We found it difficult to find good quality pieces, which could be mixed or worn under our wardrobe favourites. Mel, our designer has some wonderful one-off pieces from vintage shops and markets - great if you have the time to look for that sort of thing.
Sometimes you just want to go where you know you're going to find exactly what you want. So now Mel creates these wonderful must-haves, drawing inspiration from all her great finds.
We chose the name SpencerLacy…
Because of the ranges we offer, I wanted to use 'Spencer' in our brand name. We also wanted to use a name; the actor Spencer Tracy was mentioned and the rhyming 'lacy' came as a natural progression. Thus SpencerLacy was born. The more we repeated it, the more we liked it.
How I define glamour…
Glamour has always been around and other women
admire those who are able to pull it off successfully.
All the elements have to be in the right proportion.
On collaborating with Emma and Mel…
Emma and I have been working together for the past 10 years. We have a mutual respect for each other and similar work ethics and business philosophies. We know each other's strengths and weaknesses. It works because of our shared history.
Designer, SpencerLacy.
The classic SpencerLacy customer is…
An honest, free spirited woman with a great sense of humour.
Age is irrelevant as are her occupation and physical characteristics.
She is totally comfortable in her own skin.
I'd describe the SpencerLacy style as …
Our motto: 'bridging the gap between undergarments and outerwear… timeless and unique styling for everyday comfort' says it all.
What inspires my designs…
Our focus on layering pieces relates to what is seen in
today's high street fashion scene and street-smart attire - especially
in
Melbourne where the weather can span all seasons in one day.
The pieces I design will not always be the highlight piece
of an outfit but will complement key items.
They can be worn day in and day out with most
styles to layer an outfit - yet also work on their own.
Often I draw inspiration from the clothes in my own wardrobe.
How I define glamour…
It's not exclusive to yesteryear. It's more than make-up,
stunning frocks and the finer things in life.
One's sense of freedom and ease is the key to being glamorous.
On collaborating with Emma and Sarah…
I have worked very closely with them both for two years.
I am very lucky to be part of a friendly and inspiring team
who encourage me creatively.
