Hip to be Square    Mothers Day Classic     Cocktails for a Cause

Casting on for a cause

Following the launch of our winter collection, we had lots of enquiries about the gorgeous hand-knitted scarf, which adorns the cover of our catalogue. A 'one off', handmade by our creative director, the scarf was not for sale, but we managed to replicate it as first prize in our charity knit-a-thon.

What better way to help Melbourne's homeless people this winter than by casting on for a cause with the official SpencerLacy knitting initiative: 'Hip to be Square'?

Warming the hearts of Melbourne's needy

Thanks to everyone who got their needles moving, we received 470 squares, which were then sewn together to make 13 blankets, a hat and a scarf. It was all donated to Scared Heart Mission St Kilda fundraising manager Melanie Smith (pictured above) and distributed amongst the locals in need of a little extra warmth this winter.

Hip to be Square attracted much interest from complimentary groups including Craft Victoria who promoted the initiative at the launch of their annual Scarf Festival, Wool Baa in Albert Park, Patons, Cleckheaton, knit4charities, Australian Jewish News and we even rated a mention in the Sydney Morning Herald!

We'd like to say thanks to everyone who participated in the initiative, but an extra special mention goes to Livia Vidotto of Cheltenham, Victoria who knitted the most squares. Everyone who contributed received a $5 voucher to be spent at the brand new SpencerLacy online boutique and a gorgeous satin lingerie pouch.

At SpencerLacy, helping others is knitted into our culture.

Meet the SpencerLacy Dream Team

At SpencerLacy, we believe that being a successful fashion label also carries its share of social responsibility, so recently; we decided it was high time we became involved in a worthwhile cause.

The team at SpencerLacy is predominantly women, so the charity event closest to our hearts was The Mother's Day Classic.

Affectionately dubbed 'The SpencerLacy Dream Team', our 26-strong crew donned custom-made pink tanks emblazoned with the words: 'Fit for a modern goddess' (including the sole bloke amongst us) and power-walked its way around the 4 kilometre Melbourne Botanical Gardens walking track on Mother's Day morning.

Sure, no records were broken, but we had lots of laughs, heard inspirational stories and enjoyed the perfect autumn weather whilst walking with thousands of other individuals and teams, united in their aim of finding a cure for breast cancer.

Classical Training

Now in its tenth year, the Mother's Day Classic is an Australia-wide event which raises funds for Breast Cancer research through the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

SpencerLacy aims to make the Mother's Day Classic an annual event and we'd like to send a huge 'thank you' to everyone who supported the SpencerLacy Dream Team with their generous donations.
We wholeheartedly endorse the Mother's Day Classic as a charity event that's fit for every modern goddess.

The Starlight Foundation has a brand new program running throughout the month of May whereby prominent personalities from the media, sporting and entertainment industries host intimate events in their own homes to raise money for the charity. The inaugural 'May' fundraiser was held at the Randwick home of Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos and his lovely wife, Tammi.

Around 50 guests attended the cocktail evening from 6 - 9pm. Well-known attendees included actor David Wenham and his partner along with Sydney Swans forward Barry Hall. But the real star of the evening was a recipient of one of the Starlight Foundation's wishes, a chronically ill boy who took a real shine to Barry!

Paul was MC and spoke articulately about the fundraising activities of the Starlight Foundation, announcing the silent auction in which three SpencerLacy gift boxed sets raised a total of $1,000. Other auction items included: French champagne, designer shoes, a box for a Sydney home game and four tickets to the 2007 AFL Grand Final. In all, $15,000 was raised for the Starlight Foundation.

Three Starlight Wishes

So just how does $15,000 help? It grants three wonderful wishes. The Starlight Foundation is all about making wishes come true for seriously ill children aged 4-18 years. A qualified healthcare professional refers the ill child and their family to the Starlight Foundation and the wish granting process begins.

The true beauty of each Starlight wish is that for a short period of time, it allows the child and their family to distract themselves from the extreme stress of a terminal, chronic or critical illness.

Wishes are as boundless as a child's imagination: the latest computer, meeting someone famous, family holidays or swimming with dolphins are just some of the wishes that have been granted over the years.

The Starlight Foundation grants up to 600 wishes a year and each one costs $5,000. Thanks to Paul and Tammi Roos, the Starlight Foundation now has an extra three Starlight wishes, which will make three seriously ill children very happy.

Please help the Starlight Foundation by donating your time, services or money. Call 1300 727 827 for more information or visit www.starlight.org.au
